OF THE GOLD COUNTRY
GOLD! That was the cry that originally brought hundreds of
thousands of people to El
Dorado County. When gold was first discovered by James Marshall on January 24,
1848, nobody thought much of it. A year later the great California Gold Rush was
in full swing. The '49ers covered a lot of ground in their search for this once
abundant metal and the Gold Rush continued for 10 years until silver was
discovered in Nevada. Marshall's discovery took place on the American River at
Sutter's Mill in Coloma. Soon, gold was discovered in Hangtown Creek in
Placerville, and just about everywhere else throughout the county. Today,
the old gold camps are communities where folks enjoy real country living. There
are many things to do and see here, and you may even be the lucky one to leave
with a piece of gold. Our website is filled with information on upcoming events,
articles related to the California Gold Rush, the history of El Dorado County
and California, photos and lots of information on this very historic area in the
Gold Country.
